Old Is New - Two Gorgeous Restored New York Resorts from the 1800’s

The Inns of Aurora

STEEPED IN HISTORY, RESTORED TO LUXURY

Founded in 1789, the storybook Village of Aurora evokes a simpler, more tender time.
Tucked among this tiny village awaits the premier resort in New York’s unspoiled Finger Lakes region, a place far removed from the busy world beyond.

Enjoy a resort experience like no other, with gracious accommodations at one of their five intimate and distinctive inns, each located throughout the picturesque Village of Aurora.

The Village of Aurora is situated on the calm shores of Cayuga Lake in the heart of New York’s premier wine region. Designated as a National Historic District and under one square mile, Aurora is a peaceful respite from our busy world.

The five Inns of Aurora—along with a farm-to-table restaurant, casual pub, village market, wellness & activities center, and demonstration kitchen—are tucked into this charming setting, all within easy walking distance on Aurora’s elm-lined Main Street.

Troutbeck

The gateway to the upstate cultural and creative corridor, Troutbeck - re-envisioned and carefully updated in 2017 – is again what it was to so many before us: inspiration, respite, restoration, folly, community, nature and nurture – carrying forward its 250-year legacy of hospitality. Historic details remain amongst contemporary updates and antique furnishings - as though collected over generations. And, now, in the hands of a new generation, the house, grounds and services all reflect a certain ease, promoting a social and relaxed atmosphere whilst achieving a high standard of luxury.

Troutbeck has served as an enchanting private estate, country inn and tavern since 1765 and has, for centuries, been a favored retreat of distinguished guests important in the arts, letters, matters of policy and social justice. During the time of the estate’s first owners, the Benton Family, it played frequent host to Mark Twain, Ernest Hemmingway, Gov. Teddy Roosevelt , Henry David Thoreau, Ralph Waldo Emerson and the naturalist, John Burroughs. It was central to the civil liberties movement, frequented by Sinclair Lewis, W.E.B Du Bois, Thurgood Marshall and Langston Hughes. Troutbeck is a living house that values its history and looks to the future, reoriented for how we live, work, relax and socialize today.

FROM FARM TO TABLE

Led by Michelin starred Chef Gabe McMackin, the seasonal menu is locally sourced in the Hudson Valley. Simple, elegant and inviting. Open to all seven days a week, serving new American farm-to-table cuisine sourced from local farms and purveyors from the Hudson Valley. Serving breakfast, lunch, dinner and a fabulous brunch on Sundays.

ACTIVITIES

Whatever your outdoor pursuit, Troutbeck can accommodate. Ask about Yoga, Pilates or guided meditation. Troutbeck is surrounded by over 5,000 acres of accessible wilderness; Audaubon societies, land preserves, state parks, and the nearby Appalachian Trail. Picnics and packed lunches are easily prepared on request. There’s some of the best cycling in the country nearby. The resort is central to hundreds of miles of quiet, challenging cycling routes. For leisure riders, the Harlem Valley Rail Trail is minutes away.

There are three trout pools on a secluded stretch of the Webutuck River, accessible to residents only. Or, guided fishing and river rafting trips can be arranged on the famous Housatonic River nearby.

For the art and culture crowd, The Wassaic Project is minutes away. So too are Sharon, Kent, and Millerton – replete with book and antique shops, farmers markets and great restaurants. Hudson, Mass Moca and Dia Beacon are a stones’ throw by car.
